Hold them close...

I felt the need to write another blog post today because I sit here with a heavy heart watching my children play.

While I was a county extension agent 8 years ago, I met a wonderful young couple that were both ag instructors in two schools in the neighboring county.  Although I never got to really know them I do know that they were well respected in the community and loved by the children they taught.  They were enthusiastic about all things ag related.

This morning I found out that they lost their 4 year old son in a farming accident.  I cannot imagine what they are going through.  It is a reminder to all of us to hug our children one more time and hold them close.  Tell them just how precious and loved they are every chance we get.

Agriculture is ranked as one of the most dangerous jobs.  We in agriculture know that.  We are aware of the dangers that exist especially for kids on the farm.  But do we become complacent?  Do we rush the kids out the door when they need to burn some energy that has become explosive in the house?

I always speak about how grateful and lucky I feel to raise my children on this ranch.  I can't even think about losing one of my children.  What that must feel like.  I feel honored to be raising my girls to love and respect the land and animals around us.  I'll always feel that way.
