Moving cattle...

Wes has dreamt of converting some pasture land down along the creek behind our place to cropland since he was a little kid.  Last year he planted it to roundup ready alfalfa and hasn't looked back since.

Though doing this conversion did result in a new fence to be put in.  The girls and I went along for some fencing after Wes issued the bet of me getting soft after being pregnant and raising the girls the last 3+ years.  Well, I pounded in enough posts to prove I can still do it (and some of them even met his expectations for straightness).  The girls had a blast out there even though the mosquitos tried to carry them off.

On this past Monday, Wes and I loaded up the girls on the four-wheelers and moved the herd of heifers out to their new fall pasture.

Lil rode with me.  I had the distinct advantage of being able to chase cows better with Lil strapped on my front in a carrier.
Wes took the twins with him.  Unlike me, he can have them both sit in front of him and still reach/steer the handle bars.  Ahh, the advantages to being 6'5".  (The picture of Wes and the twins is blury cuz I zoomed in with my cell phone.  Sorry, but look at those smiling faces!)

As you can see the weather has taken a turn for the colder.  We had to pull out the stocking caps and bundle everyone up.  We had 2 nights this week with the temps at or below 32.

The seasons have changed.  That means wheat harvest is done, the water slide has been put away, cattle are being moved, hay bales are being rowed in the field and hauled home, manure needs to be hauled out of the feedlot and new cattle will be arriving in that same (clean) feedlot by month's end.

The list of things to get done before the snow flies is growing instead of shrinking.  In 2010, we got snow dumped on us September 16th.  That would be tomorrow!  I am not ready for that yet.

Here's to hoping the snow stays away for another month!
