Calving season begins in March on our ranch and that means we are always have the possibility of a nasty spring blizzard. Spring blizzards can be dangerous for our babies especially if a mama doesn't claim or clean off the baby right away. Those are the reasons for "night checks."
Night checks entail Wes getting up several times each night depending on the weather and checking the herd for new calves.
We are sure to provide shelter for the entire herd in case of cold windy weather, but the calves get special treatment. They get calf shelters just for them.
No moms allowed.
It is almost like they are teenagers with big signs on their door.
NO PARENTS ALLOWED!!!
Here the 3 girls are bundled up and toddling after Wes to get the shelters ready for the calves.
On this shelter there is a series of openings big enough for the calves, but too small to allow the cows through.
During bad weather the calves all cuddle in here while the cows lay just outside. Natural herding instinct gets the cows bunched up when the snow flies. If the calves didn't have separate shelter they would be in danger of being laid on and killed.
These 3 hooligans were acting like little monsters while they spread straw in the shelters with their daddy.
