Wheat harvest started a few days ago. Of course, it is bittersweet after the damaging hail storm we received a week ago. The guys came up with a game plan to harvest as much wheat as possible from our fields.
AA with her wheat driving out to the field to watch dad and papa harvest.
Because so much of the wheat was damaged the guys drug out the trusty old swather! Wes's hearing will never be the same. That thing is LOUD. Now, at least, he'll have a good excuse for not answering me.
Big fluffy windrows of wheat
Since we wanted to start harvest and the insurance adjusters weren't here yet we are required to leave a 12' row the length of the field as a check strip. The adjusters will then evaluate this check strip to determine the total damaged caused by the storm. The particular field was determined to have about 75% damage if I recall correctly. We had fields that ranged from 100% damage to 60% damage.
Wheat piling up in the semi! At least we are getting something off the field. Having to swath and then combine makes for a slow day. The guys were only able to get 30 acres done one afternoon.
All 3 girls sitting with dad in the swather.
Grandpa needs to clean the windows in the combine! That's papa, the girls and me in there.
AA front row seat in the combine.
TJ got to steer!
Here is a preview of what the corn looks like now. So battered.
