Planting...

Spring is here and that means the guys are out planting. Peas are going in right now and barley will soon follow. We are starting out the year with ok moisture, but we have experience with how quickly that can change. Wes and I picked up another 600 acres of rented land this year. That means we will be putting in wheat for the first time. I try to stay a "rancher" by agreeing to plant only crops for hay that will be marketed through our cattle. This year Wes got me to agree to planting wheat. Wheat is planted by "farmers." I am worried this may be the start of a long road downhill.

Calving is coming to an end. The cows are anxious to be out on pasture. It is now a daily occurrance to have cows in the yard lazily grazing the grass. Cows are smart when it comes to finding the weak spot in the fence. Wes is sick of chasing them in and doesn't have time to get the fence fixed right so he is considering putting them on grass a little bit early. The goal would be to wait until May 15th. Maybe we will make it until this weekend.

Think spring and rain!!!!
