Tessa's doctor appointment...

The four of us made the the quick trip to Fargo today. The trip is normally just over 4 hours. This morning we made it in 5 and were very happy with that time. We left at 5 am and were back home by 8 pm.

The visit with the pediatric gastroenterologist put some closure on the questions we've been having, but it almost seemed like a waste of a trip since all we did was talk with the doctor. He made his diagnosis based on the symptoms we've described to him along with what he discussed with Dr. Kantak (the pediatric allergist/pulmologist).

Tessa has a protein induced colitis. Intact proteins are making their way to her colon and causing irritation which in turn is causing the bloody stools. Babies outgrow this by the time they are 6 months old (give or take 2 months). We just need to wait it out. There are no long term side effects of this condition. Audrey has already outgrown it. Tessa needs more time. She is not allergic to anything, but I was advised to continue with a dairy-free diet.

Tessa will be worked back up to 1/2 Neocate and 1/2 breastmilk over the next week. That amount of breastmilk appears to be below her threshold of irritation. In a month we will try her on full breastmilk again to see how she responds. We will continue this until she can handle the breastmilk.

We are very happy to finally have some answers and a gameplan. I will keep you all posted as we continue this journey.
